The assessment for the British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award consists of a practical assessment and a home paper. Practical Assessment The practical assessment consists of an all-day mountain bike journey during which each candidate will be assigned to lead a section of the assessment route of up to 10km working with a ratio of 1:5. You will be expected to deliver a flowing journey whilst demonstrating good leadership and navigational skills. The assessment procedure is informal and is designed to help you develop your skills as a mountain bike leader.
The group you lead can consist of other riders who are also being assessed on the same day and/ or riders who are there, simply to fulfil the role as participants on the ride. Home Paper The home paper is an open book home study task and comprises of a range of short answer questions. This task is based on the information included in the British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Handbook and other resources provided on the training course. Please ensure you allow plenty of time to complete the home paper and ensure you send it into Plas y Brenin 2 weeks before your assessment day. Non Residential Your course is based at Plas y Brenin, The National Mountain Sports Centre in Capel Curig, North Wales, LL24 0ET.
This course is instruction only, no accommodation or meals are provided, however our famous afternoon tea and cakes are included. For courses based on-site our bar will be serving lunches from 12pm until 2pm or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch. If your course is based away from the centre then you will need to bring a packed lunch with you. Each evening our bar serves evening meals from 7pm until 8.45pm if you wish to eat here. You can arrange to have any of the following meals - breakfast, packed lunch and a three course centre dinner, by contacting our customer services team.

The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Cycling is for coaches who have experience of delivering independent coaching sessions to groups of people. This certificate enables coaches to independently create, deliver and evaluate a series of cycling coaching sessions to groups of beginner and intermediate level riders. A large portion of the course is made up of practical activities, ensuring coaches have an opportunity to experience delivering and participating within coaching sessions. Prerequisites. Be at least 18 years of age.
A commitment to complete the learning programme within 12 weeks. The opportunity to coach. You will be required to independently plan and deliver six hours of coaching. If you do not have riders to coach you must not enrol on the Level 2 qualification and should attend a Level 1. Access to the internet and a computer (see system requirements regarding accessibility). Completion of safeguarding and protecting children training within the last three years, preferably in a sports context (for example: Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop, Safeguarding and Protecting Children 2: Reflecting on Practice workshop, EduCare Child Protection in Sport and Active Leisure online course or NSPCC-CPSU Child Protection in Sport online course). Valid and current emergency first aid certificate (minimum 6 hours), or equivalent. The learning programme This programme includes three days of face-to-face delivery, as well as online knowledge development and independent coaching experience with support from a Coach Mentor. All components of the programme will need to be completed in order for you to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Cycling Programme outline The course is made up of 13 modules covering topics such as where to and what to coach, delivering activities, rider performance, safe coaching environment, developing sessions and evaluating your coaching.
Course details You will have 12 weeks to complete the learning programme. You will be given further course details two weeks prior to the start date. You are not required to complete any pre-course work, though you must have a current emergency first aid qualification and provide evidence of having, within the last three years, completed safeguarding and protecting children training, preferably in a sports context. If you will be coaching riders under the age of 18 years or vulnerable adults, you will require a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced check.
You can submit your completed form on day one of your course. Assessment You will be assessed via the following tasks:. Task 1 – plan and deliver a 15-minute practical session to a small group of peers on day two of the course. Task 2 – online multiple-choice assessment to be completed between days two and three of the course. Usatf Level 2 Coaching Certification
The Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award enables experienced mountain bikers to safely guide others on off-road terrain, thus spreading the bug that we all know, is impossible to shake. Course overview The Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award is the entry point for most aspirant mountain bike leaders, enabling qualified leaders to use their experience to safely guide others on off-road terrain. The award is ideal for anyone with experience in mountain biking, who is either working in the outdoor sector, volunteering at a club or simply has a personal interest in gaining additional skills. These skills can be used to go out on a mountain bike, be safe and have fun. Following registration for the award, learners book a two-day training course with a British Cycling accredited provider. A one-day practical assessment will follow after a consolidation period agreed with your tutor. This allows sufficient time for you to hone all those new skills and knowledge you have obtained during training.

Have mountain biking experience in a variety of terrain and weather conditions. Be competent in the techniques and skills required to safely negotiate the typical trail features encountered in the Level 2 environment.

Attention is paid to safety, increasing knowledge and practising skills. The ride will include sections of technical difficulty which reflect the Level 2 or 3. environment (.as appropriate). Journeys are likely to contain a proportion of ascent and descent throughout. Learners must have an appropriate level of physical fitness for a day’s riding in the level 2 leading environment. is during daylight in normal summer and intermediate seasonal conditions. Assessment Assessment for the Level 2 Award consists of a written assignment and a formal practical assessment. Assignment The assignment is designed to let you demonstrate your competence in some of the knowledge and application requirements of the award. It will be sent to you by the licenced provider once you have booked on a specific assessment date. It is usually issued in a written format but we will endeavour to support different formats to support specific learning needs.
You will be asked to complete the assignment and return it to the tutor for marking before attending the assessment. Meeting or exceeding a minimum assignment score is one of the requirements for a pass. Assessment The practical assessment consists of a full day mountain bike journey (5-6 hours, 40km or more is possible depending on conditions on the day) shared with other candidates and the tutor. Your group management, leadership and trailside repairs skills will be verified out on the trail by the tutor using a combination of real situations and simulation based questioning and practical sessions. The assessment is designed to put learners under a proportionate level of pressure that reflects the role of a Level 2 Mountain Bike Leader.
The tutor will facilitate your assessment throughout the day to also encourage an environment of continuous learning. They will support all learners to understand where their personal skill set meets the qualification requirements including explaining where and why, if it is not yet at the required standard.
All learners will be provided with personal action plans for future development after the assessment. Referral and Reassessment It is the intention that you are provided with enough information and guidance through training and prior to assessment that you are able to be successful. There are however occasions where this may not be the case and referral can occur.
Depending on which criteria have not yet been met a variety of actions can fulfil a future reassessment, for example written evidence, a one to one demonstration with a tutor or attendance at a new assessment opportunity. You are encouraged to discuss the assessment with the tutor you book with and with British Cycling prior to attendance to ensure that you are ready for the day. Registration with British Cycling’s Mountain Bike Leadership Programme Prior to booking onto a training course you need to pay a one-off cost to. If you do not regularly work with young people or do not have evidence of completing safeguarding training, you will need to complete online training and a short online assessment. If this is the case, we will provide log in details for an online learning programme ‘Child Protection Awareness in Sport and Active Leisure’.
